TYPE have won an AIA UK Design Award 2021 in the Emerging Practice category. Built in 1810 and long since overgrown by nature, the south Devon barn, which originally housed cattle and stored grain, has been lovingly transformed into a contemporary home. The jury praised the project for “the way that the team had taken a roofless ruined stone barn that looked beyond repair and made it into a spectacular farmhouse. Great deal of thought had gone into longevity and adaptability of the project. It’s a beautiful reuse of a derelict building and maybe even more impressive as it’s a self-built project and in that sense, it’s a real labour of love. The jury were very impressed with the attention to detail of every aspect of the project and the honest distinction between what is old and new.” Award submissions were judged on the AIA’s 10 measures and their frameworks for design excellence which seek to inspire sustainable, resilient and inclusive design.
